The style is thought to have been influenced in guitar players from hearing Jesse McReynolds’ mandolin rolls. George Shuffler, Clarence White, and Doc Watson have some famous examples of crosspicking solos.
Bluegrass has crosspicking patterns with the melody on one string while arpeggiating chords in continuous rolls on three strings, usually adjacent to each other like strings 432 or 321. Check out Molly Tuttle or Billy Strings for some new good bluegrass players. Some of the country acoustic guitar players used metal finger picks (banjo picks) as well as thumbpicks to get louder volume, Townes Van Zandt played in this style as did James Burton. It is an acoustic form and the pick brings a crisp attack and volume unlike fingertips can and many bluegrass performances are done in front of a single microphone for the whole group, so projection was key. Bluegrass is almost all flatpicked, for both rhythm and lead.
